When an Oriental rug becomes worn or damaged from constant traffic on either the entire rug or a specific area of the rug, the area damaged requires a process known as repiling. In the process of repiling, our experts will photograph the area of the design that has been worn out and make a replica design to be rewoven. The next step will be to dye the exact shades of the wools or silks. Then they will tie each knot (Persian knot or Turkish knot) with the appropriate wool or silk color as the original design.
The next step would be to shear the wool or silk to the same level of the pile. This step is mostly done is repiling of 100 year old antique rugs. We at Azhar’s specialize in Antique rugs repiling. Please view the videos of our rug restoration process.
It is normal to have rugs chewed on or bitten by your pets or inadvertently ripped. In these case, reweaving becomes necessary. Reweaving is a cumbersome process of first reconstructing the original foundation consisting of the warp & weft. Our professionals will use the same material that was originally used in the foundation of the rug whether it was wool, cotton, silk or a blend or even camel hair.
Once the foundation (warp & weft) are secured to the original warp & weft, our professionals will painstakingly re knot each and every knot with the pre-dyed wool, silk colors in the same type of knot that was existing in the rug and the same quantity of the knots (Quality), completely reknotting the rug.
Please see videos demonstrating the process
It is common that the fringes are damaged by either aggressive vacuuming or being chewed upon by pets. Refringing is important because if it is not addressed immediately, unraveling of the knots can occur and it is more of an expensive process than simply refringing. Also, if refringing is not done professionally, whereas a machine made fringe is simply glued on a handmade rug, the value of the rug will reduce dramatically. It is very important that the original fringe, whether it is wool or silk, be installed and the knotting be completely secure to make sure the knots do not unravel. Azhar’s Oriental Rugs professionals have been installing all types of fringes for more than 45 years.
Please see videos demonstrating the process of refringing very fine silk on silk Persian Qum rugs.
